Join Clara Bethell-Sacks to learn the Japanese art of kintsugi repair for broken ceramics. Spend a relaxed few hours with likeminded folk, immersed in the processes, tools and materials of kintsugi. You will be supported to complete a repair using epoxy, coated with traditional natural Japanese Urushi (tree sap) lacquer and finished to a stunning gold-hued shine with fine brass powder. WHAT TO EXPECT This workshop is suitable for complete beginners. It’s a relaxed, informal session designed to support wellbeing and connection as much as craft. You’re welcome exactly as you are. All materials for the workshop are included in the price. The workshop will take place in the Setting gallery and hot drinks, cakes and light lunches can be purchased in the adjacent café. You are welcome to choose from ceramic items provided or bring your own - either unbroken or with a crack or break no longer than 20cm. Open forms (bowls, plates) are easiest. If in doubt, feel free to send a photo beforehand. More complex repairs may need more than one session — repeat bookings are available at a reduced rate. The workshop space and toilet facilities are wheelchair accessible. Gender neutral toilet facilities are available. ABOUT THE MATERIALS We will be working with epoxy glue, epoxy putty, urushi and brass powder. Urushi is a natural lacquer made from tree sap, used here as both a finish and adhesive for brass. It is completely food-safe once fully cured, and available in glossy red-brown or black (see examples on my website or Instagram). Please note: Brass is decorative only and not food-safe. For a food-safe finish, we can simply omit the brass — urushi alone makes a beautiful final finish. Safety: Uncured urushi can cause skin irritation similar to poison ivy. Clothing that covers arms and legs is advised. Gloves are provided. PAYMENT Your booking is secured with a £20 deposit. Please select your workshop price using the Sliding Scale Guide on the Booking Form. Bring the remainder of your payment in cash on the day or contact me for alternative payment methods.

Cancellation Policy

The booking deposit of £20 is non-returnable. The remainder is payable in cash at the start of the workshop. Alternative payment methods available on request.
