"My mum was absolutely delighted with the vase, which happened to be ready just in time for her birthday last year. It is now once more pride of place and is filled with my flowers each time I go and visit."
The vase, a rather beautiful grey and green large porcelain jug shape, was given long ago to Caroline's mum, Ann, by one of her oldest and dearest friends. Ilse Westheimer, had been Ann's beloved teacher and then friend, after arriving in England as a refugee from Nazi Germany (most of her family perished).
Ilse was a wonderful and cheery woman who loved dancing and beautiful things and who gave Ann some beautiful gifts over her life. The vase was by a moderately successful artist, and was one of Ann's most treasured possession's, so she was very upset when, one day
in the garden, it got knocked over and badly damaged.
Knowing that her daughter, Caroline, lived in an area where there were a lot of creative people, she asked if she could find someone to help. When she heard of Clara's kintsugi service, she was very keen on the idea of the visible mend, and, as a shiatsu practitioner, liked the connection with Japanese culture.
